Plan9 from Bell Labs is an OS that is new to /g/. There are several "types" of Plan9. Plan9 was created by the original creator of UNIX at the same place and is intended to fix inherent flaws in the design of UNIX.
Plan9 was open-sourced in 2002.
Distributions
Plan9, the regular distribution, the fourth edition from Bell Labs.
9legacy, which is several patches on top of the regular distro.
9atom augments the Plan9 distribution with the addition of a 386 PAE kernel, an amd64 cpu and terminal kernel, nupas, extra PC hardware support, IL and Ken's fs.
Inferno is a distributed operating system started at Bell Labs, but is now developed and maintained by Vita Nuova Holdings as free software.

9front is an active, community-led fork of Plan9.
