Links

Add more links to the front page. E.g. Really common things that people look to /g/ for advice for, like the headphones page. --InstallFuntoo (talk) 16:52, 27 January 2014 (EST) For that to happen we need information on the specific topic (collect inforaphics to help). I will add some new pages. --Bisasam (talk) 17:18, 27 January 2014 (EST)

Can an Admin add the links to previous /g/ wikis here or on the main page so we can get moving articles across? - Oitap — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oitap (talkcontribs) 21:22, 29 January 2014‎ (UTC)

Add a link to Special:AllPages

At least until the front page gets sorted out.

I agree completely. Please put a link to all pages until there are at least 50+ pages. --Fontain (talk) 18:34, 27 January 2014 (EST)

will do. --Bisasam (talk) 18:43, 27 January 2014 (EST)

Telecom/Handheld

Can I get a Handhelds or Portables cat for phone/telecom/tablet on the front page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kek (talkcontribs) 22:57, 28 January 2014‎ (UTC)

Clean up main page

Clean up the main page, and add some more links to it. Also, add some more IRC channels to it. Whether you like it or not, most of 4chan (and especially /g/) is on Rizon. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chchjesus (talkcontribs) 09:26, 29 January 2014 (UTC)‎

I volunteer myself to make a new logo if need be. I don't see much of a problem with the current logo. It could perhaps use a little bit of padding, but I think it looks decent overall. --Placebo (talk) 17:34, 29 January 2014 (EST)

Simply using Gentoo's logo isnt the greatest idea. maybe we could add /<logo>/ in the same style to it --Bisasam (talk) 05:33, 4 February 2014 (EST)

How does this look? I admit I could probably change the gradient styles and colors. IDK if it's still too much to be using derivatives of the Gentoo logo. Seems fitting tho.

looks great. can i edit it?--Bisasam (talk) 11:38, 10 February 2014 (EST)

Copyright law is always tricky. It would be in public domain because the wiki is, which means no copyright laws apply to it. However, since this wiki is hosted in USA, U.S. copyright laws also apply here. See wikipedia:Wikipedia:Image_use_policy#Public_domain. I would assume that means the creator published it in public domain so you could do whatever you want, but it's a derivative work based on a work licensed under CC-BY-SA-2.5 (Gentoo logo) so you have to license your work under similar Creative Commons license as well. I will also assume you cannot take a CC-BY-SA work and turn it into PD legally. I'll notify User:Placebo about this so he can choose a CC license. WubTheCaptain (talk) 18:15, 10 February 2014 (EST)
I can upload the SVG if you want. --Placebo (talk) 05:37, 11 February 2014 (EST)
This wiki doesn't allow uploading SVGs yet, I've requested it a few days ago. WubTheCaptain (talk) 19:13, 13 February 2014 (EST)

I was thinking something more like this, but less crudely done. Can anyone create a higher quality version maybe?

Tux.png

--Gentooinstaller.exe (talk) 00:14, 16 February 2014 (EST)

There's multiple issues: 1. You took the Tux.png name indescriptively that could have been needed by some other file 2. Your file doesn't have a license, so it's in public domain or risk of getting deleted. WubTheCaptain (talk) 18:37, 16 February 2014 (EST)

New Layout

the new layout makes it possible for non-admins to edit the Todo and Other topics pages. --Bisasam (talk) 09:47, 6 February 2014 (EST)

Different Favicon

Seriously, this is giving me some whiplash.

The favicon is currently the same as the default used for thread updates in 4chan X. If it could be set to anything but its current icon, that would be great. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Watashi (talkcontribs) 10:00, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Added a favicon to match the new logo:

Guide to editing this wiki

I've redirected Guide to editing this wiki to wikispace, please change the mainpage link to point to /g/wiki:Guide to editing this wiki with [[:/g/wiki:Guide to editing this wiki|Guide to editing this wiki]]. WubTheCaptain (talk) 22:49, 9 February 2014 (EST)

I also took the decision to name the wikispace as /g/wiki:, if there's something else you'd like to use such as InstallGentoo: then go ahead. Further discussion may be appropriate. WubTheCaptain (talk) 22:50, 9 February 2014 (EST)
Don't you think it should be The /g/ wiki? --Gentooinstaller.exe (talk) 00:51, 16 February 2014 (EST)
The wiki creator had already set the namespace to /g/wiki in config during creation, so it coincidentally happened to be accurate. WubTheCaptain (talk) 03:11, 16 February 2014 (EST)

Spambots

We need an admin noticeboard instead of editing this talk page, by the way. User:Antoinette95D, User:SalvadorGfu, and many others on Special:Log/newusers could use a banishment. mediawikiwiki:Extension:SpamBlacklist and many others would be very helpful here too. I've always known that CAPTCHA is mostly an useless countermeasure against spambots and how CAPTCHA hurts legitimate users. WubTheCaptain (talk) 17:22, 13 February 2014 (EST)

Spambots are always an issue with small wikis. We do currently have the CAPTCHA prompt for users adding new links. So it's likely that the spammers are human to some degree. I don't know if adding a DNSBL such as project honeypot or spamhaus would help. I found this mediawiki addon: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Check_Spambots --Placebo (talk) 22:18, 16 February 2014 (EST)

I installed the Check_Spambots extension, and while I agree CAPTCHA isn't ideal it works okay enough and it will stay. --Bananafish (talk) 16:51, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

I have tried everything to get rid of spambots on my own wiki - it appears to be impossible. I even tried setting up captchas based on the wiki's content - that was effective for a few weeks, and then cracked. And then I changed and questions and answers, and they were solved instantly. In-short, the "bots" are powered by people. I tried setting up an extension where mods had to approve all new user accounts, but the extension didn't fucking work at all, and all requests for support were completely ignored. The only solution I found that worked was to just cut-off new user registrations and make everyone edit anon. Toynbeeidea (talk) 17:51, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

AAAND I hate to say "told you so," but here we are. Toynbeeidea (talk) 14:23, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

I have marked all of the spam articles with the following tag: Delete|Spam. To list them, one needs merely to type it into the search box and hit enter. Hopefully, this will minimise the effort expended in their deletion. --Rapespider (talk) 04:05, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

I recommend we temporarily disable new user creation or require new users to join an IRC channel first. --Tibs (talk) 03:44, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

I agree. For actual would-be contributors, requesting an account via IRC should be trivial. The administrators should not have to go through a daily process of deleting the amount of spam that we've been subjected to lately. --Rapespider (talk) 02:57, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Ricing the Front Page

Why hasn't this been done yet? We need something to make this place look better. --Gentooinstaller.exe (talk) 00:47, 16 February 2014 (EST)

Have you considered doing it yourself? WubTheCaptain (talk) 03:02, 16 February 2014 (EST)
How about a dark theme by default? --Placebo (talk) 06:32, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

Rant about transclusions

Other topics and Todo List should be Template:Main page/Other topics and Template:Main page/Todo list or similar respectively. I can't move them efficiently because they're transcluded. WubTheCaptain (talk) 07:16, 17 February 2014 (EST)

done --Bisasam (talk) 11:16, 17 February 2014 (EST)
"Done?" Excuse me, but do you even wiki? Now we don't have the edit history on those new pages because you didn't move the existing ones there. Solution: Delete the new ones, move the old ones (without redirect). No offense intended, but this is pretty incompetent from a wiki sysop. WubTheCaptain (talk) 11:24, 17 February 2014 (EST)
you really think thats a big deal?--Bisasam (talk) 11:28, 17 February 2014 (EST)
From a wiki's point, yes it is. You're leaving orphan pages behind too, it's about maintenance. WubTheCaptain (talk) 11:30, 17 February 2014 (EST)
in germany we call this bürokratismus--Bisasam (talk) 11:35, 17 February 2014 (EST)
Bisasam (Talk | contribs) moved page Other topics to Main page/Other topics without leaving a redirect It's Template:Main page/Other topics. And lowercase L! Template:Main page/Todo list, sigh. WubTheCaptain (talk) 11:35, 17 February 2014 (EST)
shit. fix'd. why are we doing this again?--Bisasam (talk) 11:41, 17 February 2014 (EST)
No, it's not fixed. Move Template:Main Page/Todo List to Template:Main page/Todo list. WubTheCaptain (talk) 11:44, 17 February 2014 (EST)

User creation spam

We need a CAPTCHA or other anti-spam device on user registrations, NOW! I've been watching the user registration pages and they're creating new accounts and fucking advertising --Chchjesus (talk) 07:14, 18 February 2014 (EST)

We have had CAPTCHA for a while now, and its helping a lot. --Bisasam (talk) 08:38, 18 February 2014 (EST)
Which hurts users and isn't that effective later when you get 10 registrations bypassing CAPTCHA everyday. We need to ask User:bananafish on IRC to install some antispam extensions. WubTheCaptain (talk) 08:42, 18 February 2014 (EST)
Actually i am going to have to correct you here, CAPTCHA stopped waves of registrations from russia. The only way spammers bypass reCAPTCHA is via human solvers right now.--Bisasam (talk) 09:01, 18 February 2014 (EST)

Main Page/Sandbox

I've sandboxed the main page so everyone can make edit proposals. Now I just need some wiki sysop to copy (not move) the contents over to Main Page. It uses templates, so the edit history should be much more cleaner too. I advise to leave the templates unprotected. WubTheCaptain (talk) 16:43, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

Formalized Methods for editing 'List of recommended software' pages moving forward

I've been pretty low on my contributions to the list of software for Windows page. This is largely do to the fact that I was out of town and had no access to internet for merely a week, but I had figured something would have eventually been worked out on these pages.

I've identified a few issues that I don't know how to handle but have made it hard for me—and presumably others—to make edits

There's no consistent method for uploading software logos

Clearly it's become custom to embed a logo next to a software's name and description. I like this idea, however it seems everyone has implemented it their own way. I use the following naming convention: 'Software Name.filetype' while I've also seen 'Software Name small.filetype' and others. We need something consistent, I don't care what we use for it however. Also, I think those icons should preferably be 48x48 px.

No clear purpose of the pages

On the Windows list of software recommendations, I offered my own introduction and advice but since then no one has intervened. I don't think mine is sufficient. We need an editorial point of view that is objective and serves a specific focus.

What type of detail

This ties in to the lack of point of view for these pages. What I'm referring to here is how we construct descriptions and recommendations for software. I haven't had a consistent method for this, opting to write whatever I thought looked good.

Thanks for looking at what I have to say; feel from to make your own criticisms of the pages or to disagree. These issues may also effect other pages, and I hope if we make clarifications and clear things up we can be more productive. Some people may like the lack of order as being "organic" or "community-based" but come on, fifty different ways of doing the same thing isn't productive.

Deletions Requested

I marked marked many redirects with Delete|Unnecessary Redirect. A few other useless pages are marked with Delete|Garbage. A special case is the Questionable Software page. I believe that it should be deleted, but some people might disagree. --Rapespider (talk) 05:14, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

...such as myself. I also disagree some of your marked pages should be deleted without putting the information on another page --Bisasam (talk) 12:44, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
Firefox ricing, National Spying Agency, Nef Quintero, and Questionable Software; I presume. I did actually move some of the content from Questionable Software to Java (programming language), although I am not sure that this was ideal. Perhaps Controversial software would be a better name for the Questionable Software page? At any rate, I have removed the deletion tags from those pages. Ergopon/Choosing a Distro is a junk page that seems to have been created by accident. Everything linked here is, I believe, an unnecessary redirect with no content. Primarily, my intention was to find and mark the growing number of unnecessary redirects for convenient deletion. If you prefer that I refrain from doing so in the future, I will. Come to think of it, I also moved a few pages to follow Wikipedia's naming conventions, since User:WubTheCaptain believed that this should be done. I only just now noticed that he elected to leave due to some disagreement with an administrator, so perhaps I have missed something. As with the redirects, I will refrain from doing so in the future of you like. --Rapespider (talk) 13:56, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
Nah man, its fine. You're helping a lot. Questionable Software exists to explain /g/'s unusual and rather extreme opinion on certain software (Chrome, Skype, etc. you know what i'm talking about). As for deleting the redirects: always take a look at "what links here" to fix the pages linking to a redirect. IMO naming conventions are not our top priority right now, but they are still nice to have.--Bisasam (talk) 14:57, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
I suppose that I can understand why the Questionable Software page is necessary. I have moved it to Questionable software to comply with naming conventions. The resulting redirect can probably be safely deleted. While I did try to avoid touching any redirects related to the front page, I did not really consider the fact that they might be linked to elsewhere. Is there some method of determining what links to a given page that I am overlooking? --Rapespider (talk) 14:45, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
On the left sidebar, under 'Tools' you can find 'What links here'.--Bisasam (talk) 14:57, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
Oh my, I cannot believe that I missed that. Thanks for the information. --Rapespider (talk) 15:03, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

/g/wiki name change

It has been requested by several contributors and users of this wiki to change the name so that it would be more community neutral. This wiki receives several contributions from chans other than 4chan's /g/ board and in an effort to maintain fairness I have changed the name to the InstallGentoo Wiki. This wiki is still the wiki for /g/ but we would just like to open it up and make other like minded (tech focused) communities feel welcome. For a wiki to thrive and be useful we need as many knowledgeable and enthusiastic contributors as possible. Please let me know if there are any questions or concerns.

New extension

I think it would be beneficial to add Extension:FlaggedRevs to accomodate editing for some high-quality pages like GNU/Linux, Babbies First Linux, List of recommended GNU/Linux software, Web browsers and other pages to prevent major edit war and forced undo edits. —Morpheus (talk) 22:05, 23 December 2015 (EST)

New Twitter

I believe that we should use [[GNU Social], and use a relay to post to Twitter. quitter.se supports a relay such as this natively. --The One, The Only... Chocolate Chip! (talk) 22:41, 9 January 2016 (EST)

Why? For practical reasons, I believe that Twitter is good enough. Also, I think it can be done the other way around, right?  Morpheus talk 01:07, 10 January 2016 (EST)
There are a large amount of reasons to avoid twitter, besides the obvious non-free javascript.
1) Twitter has started blocking tor access. This is currently just for users, but will mostly likely become site-wide soon.
2) Twitter has begun to censor people with their inane rules. This includes anti-refugee comments, and anti-SJW comments.
3) Twitter openly said with no shame that they will begin selling user data to third-party providers.
There are reasons to avoid it. --The One, The Only... Chocolate Chip! (talk) 03:08, 10 January 2016 (EST)
So, it is because of philosophical reason rather than practical reasons. While I can understand the point you're making, But the final authority of the decision would be on User:bananafish. So, I can't comment further on this.  Morpheus talk 03:32, 10 January 2016 (EST)
