Nowadays (especially with the rise of the Wuhan Flu 2020) a lot of personal scams are happening on e-markets and semi-targeted on messaging platforms. The police will not be able to help you because they have got bigger fish to catch. Never trust those with low or few reviews and try to visit the person who you're buying from.

Brandweer-chan is coming to save you

Overall country with good, sane people and very comfy living.

Lifestyle

Everything is on the expensive side, but as long as you're middle class or higher, you're good. Half of your income is probably going to healthcare and insurances, but you'll get some of the best facilities available in return. There's a fuckton of jobs in IT with lots of startups.

  • Toptier albeit expensive public transport throughout the country, vaguely proportional to the geographical population density.
  • Current trend of lower class getting retarded (HUEHUE 5G BAD) by widespread misinformation campaigns and media outlets slightly joining in on the hysteria, inevitably leads to congregated pools of social anger and mistrust.
  • Many larger cities are infested with segregations of (sand)niggers shipping drugs, stealing bikes and your online bank credentials.
  • Lots of electric cars (majority Teslas) because of tax benefits.
  • Beer (Heineken and Amstel are commonly considered amongst the bottom tier of beers available)

Internet

Compared to the rest of Europe it's pretty good but there's some pressing issues. Costs vary greatly on where you live; worst case 25E for "25/5" Mbps on copper to best case 35E for 1/1 Gbps fiber.

You can check available speeds on Breedbandwinkel. For a complete list you can usually find one on the website of your gemeente.

The only provider which actually cares about your freedoms is XS4ALL, but they recently got bought and are getting killed by KPN. All customers will be switched to KPN by 2020. Former XS4ALL workers founded Freedom Internet and is slowly getting traction, albeit quite expensive.

Copper lines

When internet was privatized a long time ago, KPN got hold of the phone lines (DSL family) and Ziggo got hold of the coax (famous green 'tv cables' running into your living room). They maintain a massive monopoly in the ISP domain and are known for some shitty practices:

  • Stalling IPv6 roll out for as long as possible. Recently those with static IPv4 sometimes get forced to give up their IP for recycled dynamic ones, even on some business plans lol
  • Each year around May, internet speeds are slightly increased on all plans but so are the prices. You're supposed to swallow that annual bullet.
  • Whenever there is an initiative to roll out fiber, said initiative is bought out (usually by KPN), giving them the kiss of death. You'll never hear from the initiative again. Expect postponements of 5-10 years in getting fiber.
    • Sometimes KPN claims they will provide fiber to a city, so smaller providers back off out of fear of not getting enough user interest. In the end they never roll out fiber.
  • Phone line speeds are relatively slow but fairly stable and gets you up to ~50 Mbps if you're lucky enough to live near the splitting station. With the current coaxial DOCSIS 3.0 implementation, speeds are generally in the range of 250 to 500 Mbps down. Upload speeds are usually divided by 10 for both.
  • Despite coax being less prone to signal deterioration per length, Ziggo markets "Gigabit" (their retarded effort to invest in DOCSIS 3.1 to stall fiber) even though the chance of actually getting 1 Gbps is questionable with many current coax connections. Besides, they don't mention anywhere that even if you get Gbps, the upload limit is capped at 50 Mbps omegaLUL. On top of that they falsely advertise it as a fiber connection, but in reality they mean their internal infrastructure is fiber up until the neighborhood splitting box. From there on, it's coax until your home.

Quite some big cities are plagued by this monopoly, but recently there is some improvement in municipalities trying to gain traction when it comes to fiber.

Since 2020, KPN allows you to use your own modem, but Ziggo forces you to use their own and put it in Bridge mode if you really want to use your own gear.

Fiber

Fiber is pretty cheap and nearly always symmetrical. Most go for 500/500, however 1 and 10 Gbps are available in some places as well. The fiber infrastructure is open for all providers to join, so if there's a lot of providers active in your area, prices can get dirt cheap (30-50 euro for gigabit).

All new-built houses are equipped with two strands of redundant fiber and many smaller towns are already converted to fiber with excellent local providers.

Tech

  • Everyone is tech literate, except for boomers
  • Best English speakers in the world outside of English speaking countries (albeit with very thick iconic Dutch accent)
  • Everyone torrents. However, if you saturate your bandwidth for a long time, you will get a letter from your ISP requesting you to tone it down
  • No one really got into trouble for pirating stuff, but if you "download a lot of Linux ISOs", consider using a VPN
  • There is Marktplaats (Dutch equivalent of Craigslist) but it's become an ad-invested cancerous website attracting the most rude and retarded folks. Consider using "Marktplaats zonder spam" addon to get rid of all sponsored content. When it comes to tech, there's a fuckton of niggers trying to steal your money or sell you broken stuff so try only to scout for gems.
  • All techies have moved on to Tweakers, an excellent website to check prices of computer parts and to sell/buy second hand stuff with pretty good rating system. Lots of very friendly and knowledgeable people on its forums too, unfortunately it's slowly dying as the user base is slowly shrinking.

2D and 3D

Hentai and the like is fine as long as it is no realistic 3D. Shipping items is fine.

There was a legal institution which promoted relationships with minors. After public opinion and the fact that most of members were pedos in possession of CP (surprise surprise lmao) it got shut down. Talking about sex related subjects is no taboo, however advocating for relationships with minors nowadays will most likely get your head smashed. If you do consider mingling with minors, either seek help or kill yourself.

Prostitution is legal and well regulated. Amsterdam is well-known for its red light district and you can find it in other cities as well.

Bestiality is not okay.

Buying stuff

Second hand stuff: Marktplaats. Similar to Craigslist. Pay very good attention, its reputation keeps getting worse over the years.

New / second hand tech products: Tweakers. Much better alternative to Marktplaats when it comes to tech stuff. Its Pricewatch allows you to compare product prices across the major distributors. It also has a very friendly forum section. It's also one of the few good sources of tech-related news.

New stuff: bol.com. Similar to Amazon. Speaking about Amazon, they are active in the Netherlands as well but it sucks. If you really need to use Amazon, you can take a look at our German neighbors' Amazon instead, they have much more products. In the future we might see a battle between Amazon and Bol, but for now Bol has a solid foot here.

Flea markets: Koningsdag. Each year on the King's birthday everyone sells their old stuff on the streets. Get up fucking early to scout if you want to spot them gems.

Postal service

They fucking keep changing the postal service every 10 years, now it's called PostNL. Recently notorious for underpaying and exploiting their employees, with sometimes shitty results but overall they do well.

PostNL has a deal with AliExpress. Your packets typically arrive in 2-3 weeks.

Orders above 22E are subject to VAT, see the buyfag guide for more info. If you feel like taking a risk, contact the seller to put a lower value on the box. Importing a phone with 15E on the label will obviously not work and will get you into trouble with the customs office.

Law and government

Most drugs are illegal but no one really cares until you're making trouble or carrying more than personal use. Ordering drugs online or irl is easier than ordering a stamp. You can even legally get your drugs tested on purity/contents at some hospital branches without police interference, to reduce risk of going bad.

The AIVD (analog of NSA/BSD) has some really talented people working for them and they can go to extreme lengths to fuck up your shit. Judging from Dutch news outlets, their main focus lies on targeting large deep web operations and political interference. Alongside unspecified wireless tapping, the recently adopted Sleepwet law (see wp article) allows for unspecified wired tapping which is pretty bad. Though unless you do anything very shady you're fine as the Netherlands is by far no dystopian clusterfuck.

If arrested, you are allowed to withhold your passwords and secrets such as encryption keys, fingerprint and the unlock code of your phone. "Nemo tenetur (right to remain silent)". Jail time is fairly short as focus lies more on rehabilitation. Unfortunately this is exploited by some criminals to do shady shit so when they get caught, they get a pretty chill time in prison compared to many other countries.

Though the Dutch government has some pretty good digital services, it's a meme that they're extremely bad with IT. They fund a lot of IT projects (e.g. digitalizing public services) but they fuck up every time (e.g. way too short of budget, then the project inevitably failing).

Public transit requires you to check-in and out with an OV chipcard (similar to Britain's Oyster), which logs every place you've been. This data has been used before to check which students commit housing allowance fraud.

As of July 2019, there's a 95E fine for using a phone while riding the bike. Reading books or preparing your lunch on the go is fine though. Biking drunk is technically not allowed, but how else are you going to get home. In fact, the authorities prefer you riding home drunk by bike so you don't opt for driving a car instead.

Education

  • Some of the best universities worldwide. There are three technical universities: Delft, Eindhoven and Twente. If you want to do a serious engineering program, do it here. Most other universities are very good as well.
  • Tuition fees used to be compensated for Dutch nationals, now it is not anymore. But hey, at least the government managed to let some (((big corps))) keep their main office in the Netherlands by removing the dividend tax, saving a few thousand jobs, right?
  • Teachers are getting a shit pay and there's a massive shortage of them, up to the point of employing unqualified foreigners who can barely speak a few words Dutch
  • Finding housing is impossible unless you're lucky enough to be acquainted with someone who already has a spot somewhere. Living outside town and travelling a bit to your institution is fairly common. Make sure you get yourself a bike (good ol' beats walkin')
