Red Hat is a large corporation based in the US which maintains and develops Red Hat Enterprise (GNU/)Linux, Fedora, and even pushes patches back upstream to Linux. Red hat is responsible for creating The Free Desktop Standard and systemd.
Red Hat also issues many System Certifications which are standardized in the computer industry.
Red Hat was once the most popular distribution, especially in the consumer market. They were also the first commercial FLOSS company. Their stock had an incredibly high IPO when it first was released, but has since become a chump-change stock.
