IBM Compatible is a term meaning that a computer is based on, or directly compatible with, the IBM PC. The term originated in the 1980s and is still used today. Some individuals prefer to use a more modern, and proprietary term Wintel (a Portmanteau of Windows and Intel) which means the same thing.
